Strengthening Safeguarding Practices in India: A Commitment to Child Protection

Bangalore, November 2024 – The Peyton Institute for Families hosted a two-day Consultation on Synodality on 21st and 22nd November 2024 at St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore, bringing together 41 participants, including 1 bishop, 5 theologians, 19 laypeople, 5 pastoral clergy, 5 religious nuns, and 6 religious men. The event fostered meaningful dialogue on the meaning and practical implications of synodality for the Church in India.

The program began with an inaugural prayer led by Dr. Yesudoss, Director of St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, followed by a keynote address that set the tone for the discussions. On the first day, participants explored what synodality demands from laypeople, clergy, and hierarchy in terms of attitudes, perceptions, and behavior patterns. They also examined the enablers and obstacles to synodality in daily Church life and proposed solutions to overcome these challenges. The day concluded with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Most Rev. Lawrence Pius Dorairaj, Bishop of Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu.

The second day focused on refining recommendations to strengthen synodal practices and identifying strategies to nurture a more participatory Church culture. Discussions also centered on necessary organizational and structural changes to build a vibrant and credible synodal Church in India. The consultation ended with a vote of thanks and an informal post-lunch session on ongoing research related to synodality.

This event marked a significant step in deepening the understanding of synodality and shaping a more inclusive, cohesive, and participatory Church community in India.
